Bank of Texas and Half Price Books Team up to Support Family Literacy

During the month of June, Bank of Texas is conducting their annual "Caring for Kids" drive and collecting books for LIFT Family Literacy Workshops.  As part of that drive, Half Price Books donated 2,350 books to the drive.  LIFT conducts Family Literacy Workshops to teach parents how to read to their children.  Each child whose parent participates in the workshop receives a book to take home and read with with their parents.

Thank you Bank of Texas and Half Price Books for supporting LIFT and Family Literacy!

Adults at the lowest levels of literacy are in the greatest need of our attention. Illiterate adults do not have the full range of economic, employment, social and personal choices which are available to people with higher levels of literacy.

In a recent poll, 90% of Fortune 100 executives expressed concern that low literacy is hurting their productivity and profitability. More than 60% of non-managerial jobs in Dallas require a high school diploma.

60% of adults in the greater Dallas area between the ages of 19 and 44 read below the high school level and 49% read at or below a fourth grade level. Meanwhile, more than 60% of non-managerial jobs in the city require a high school diploma. At present, 43% of students in the DISD drop out by the 9th grade.   It's not hard to see the impact these facts could have on the quality of life and the economy of our city.  GED Preparation classes are offered two ways.  Adult learners can take traditional classes at LIFT's Main Street offices, located in downtown Dallas or adult learners can access the new GED Direct Program, an online distance learning program for GED preparation.  For more information on both of these programs, call LIFT at 214.824.2000.

According to the United Way, 30 % of Dallas area residents are Hispanic. LIFT's English as a Second Language program serves the low literate sector of this population. In fact, LIFT is the only local organization that specializes in ESL instruction for students who have a low level of reading proficiency in their native language.

After a skill assessment and three months of basic classes, students enter either "Real Life English" or "English ASAP" classes. Both series teach essentials for functioning in the community and the workplace.
The program teaches parents how to engage their children with books, and encourages families to read together at home. These classes provide opportunities for parents and children to learn together.

Since early 2002, Family Literacy classes have been meeting weekly at several Head Start sites and other locations. The program is a gateway for Head Start parents to enroll in ESL or Adult Literacy classes at LIFT.
