Literacy - Classroom instructors teach basic literacy and life skills to groups of 2-15 adults. Each volunteer commits to meeting his/her class once a week for two hours. Because the program duration is usually two years, instructors must make a commitment of at least six months and must attend a two-hour classroom session and a four-hour phonics training session.
Learning Lab - LIFT also offers a learning lab where students can work individually or with a lab instructor. Curricula include CD-ROM software to supplement classroom training.

Some of the software includes alphabetic-phonics instruction, word and sentence building, reading comprehension, and math games.
Volunteer lab instructors may also provide guided reading practice and may assist students with lessons. LIFT requires lab instructors to make a six-month commitment and to attend phonics training and a learning lab introduction.
ESL - It is not required to speak Spanish to be a LIFT ESL teacher. Although many of the students are Spanish-speaking, many are not, and it is not unusual for students in an ESL class to speak Laotian, Ethiopian or Portuguese. An ESL instructor should be prepared to make a commitment of at least 2 to 4 hours per week for 14 weeks. Morning and evening teaching schedules are available.
